Heard this buzz word, If yes, you can rate yourself ‘up-to-date geek’. If not, read on, still in the end of this post you can rate yourself so. Even this post is late by quite some time months since this word came into prominence. Before talking about Mashup, I’d take an analogy to explain.

Probably most of us are aware what an Operating System (OS) is and what it mean to the overlying applications. Probably it exposes numerous APIs to interact with the underlying hardware resources. The overlying applications just call the APIs to access the Hardware resources. But for the OS in place there, programming would have been a nightmare even now. A simple explanation would be

In the above picture, it’s clear that, the user applications just make use of the APIs provided by the OS to get access to whatever resources it want to access. But for this infrastructure, it’s really tough to have even a small application program running and we’d not have the comfort of so many high-level programming languages.

Now coming back to the original discussion, Mashup or Mashup application make use of the similar infrastructure available over the internet. They make use of the services from different websites / service providers and provide altogether completely different service which is more useful and powerful in the end-user perspective. Something like

A Mashup application or website may be defined as “An application that consumes the output of more than one service and ‘mash’ them up to provide a new service to the end user”. Let’s discuss a typical example. When we impose the data from http://weather.com over the map data provided by Google maps, we get a altogether rich user interface displaying the weather of a particular region along with the forecasts. Something likehttp://www.weatherbonk.com.

Now Mashups have opened a new set of applications that can provide the end user the flexibility and the benefits of more than one service providers. There are hundreds of Mashups already in place. Mashups can also find a very big market in the Enterprise world as well. In my next post I’ll discuss something interesting Mashups and procedure to create a new Mashup.

Today let me write something useful regarding Gmail. This may be simple stuff for the techie community. But I want this to be known to those find it difficult to manage between their POP3 mails and different Gmail accounts. You can get all the accounts / mails under a single login. It’s pretty simple and straight forward.

Logon to your primary Gmail account, and click the ‘Settings’ link in the top right corner.

Go to the ‘Accounts’ tab

Click the ‘Add another email address’ under send mail as (shown in above snapshot), A windows pops out asking for a email and Name. Just fill in the other email details. Once you are done with this step, Google tries to send a verification code to the mail id you have mentioned.

Login to the other mail id and find the verification code in mail sent by Google for the verification purpose and enter in the Google mail settings.(mentioned in the previous step). You are ready now to send a mail from your Gmail as more then one sender. One as the primary account id and another is the new one you have added just now. You can go on adding any number of accounts in similar fashion. I’m not sure, if it’s a upper limit. But I’m using more than 5 accounts in similar fashion… J

Now come to the next part, to receive mails from other accounts. The only condition for this that the other account should be any POP3 enabled or a Gmail account where the POP3 is enabled. For this uder the same ‘Accounts’ tab, click the ‘Add another mail account’ under the ‘Get mail from other accounts’ (shown in the above snap)

In the window that pops out, enter the mail id and click ‘Continue’

Now you get the screen something similar to the above snapshot. Here, you have to fill in the user login credentials. If another mail account is a Gmail account, it fills up the POP server details automatically. Otherwise, you have to supply the details of the server. Now you have other options for storing the mails.

Once you are done with this step, Google tries to authenticate the login credentials, If successful, it is added to your mailbox. From then you can receive the mails coming into another mail account as well in your primary Gmail account. If you have not added the same mail-id as for sending mail from as explained in the first part, Google itself prompts to do so and follows the same steps.

From now, when you are composing a new message or replying to a message, you will find a drop-down containing the list of mail accounts you have added in the first part along with your primary account. Hope you find this post useful…. J

Daily we come across so many business opportunities…more than 90% of them may be scams and even a non-pratical model for doing it. When I ‘s roaming on the web for a business opportunity…millions of sites were there for online business opportunity…but I wanted something concrete as these business opportunities promised to make me a millionare overnight..!

In my porcess of searching…I came across the term called “Premium domains”. I digged out the term and learnt a lot of market value behind the product. The business model is simple…!

You own a domain name
You list the domain name for sale
A interested buyer contacts you / your broker
A deal is finalized
The domain ownership is transfered for the cash in return…!

You own a domain name : It’s quite simple today to register a domain. There are numerous registers available. I do with http://www.domain.com/. Go there search for the name you want and register it. It sounds simple..! The catch here is the domain name that you want or that sounds interesting or that sounds marketable might not be availale for you as someone else might have picked it up…:( You have to do so many searches with lot of permutation and combination to pick one..! Once you are ready with a name, you can pay and register. It costs very less only for the common extensions.

You list the domain name for sale : Now you have the domain name you wanted to sell. You have to let the potential buyers know such name exists. This you can do in two ways..

Develop a site and have regular visitors for the site and have an advertisement in your site saying ‘The site is for sale..’ It’s a long process..!
List your domain name with some brokers, who will take care of the listing and the deal process completely. It’s easy and fast. Nothing comes for free…check their brokerage..
The other steps are taken care by the brokers themselves involving you in the process. There are so many brokers available in the market. I selected Sedo for myselft after comparing with lot many based on the ease of doing it, brokerage, market coverage, and of course popularity.

The revenue this business can generate is concrete. It depends purely on your creativity and name-selection. The brokers also offer some paid service for promoting your site in their listing that helps..!

A 10$ investment may pay you a million USD…It all depends..still it’s a business…!
